Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; But on the contrary repay with a blessing.

- 1 Peter 3:8-12

Unity is defined as wholeness, agreement, harmony. These words are extremely difficult to find in our vernacular today More prevalent are hatred, violence, and blame. No one is exempt from the fallout of the rampant bitterness, contempt, and hostility engulfing our lives today . I sometimes find myself overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and frustration. As a Christian, I want to maintain a tender heart and a humble mind. What can I do to remain hopeful and patient. How can I help change the chaotic landscape? Fortunately, there are organizations and programs that offer opportunities to engage in productive participation. I can seek ways to express my thoughts and feelings in an attempt to kindle agreement and harmony.

Recently, another avenue opened up when I read a quote from Mother Teresa that made me realize I could be missing an obvious chance to inspire unity of spirit to a very small, but incredibly important, circle.

Upon receiving the Nobel Prize she was asked, “What can we do to promote world peace.” She replied, “Go home and love your family.” Sounds easy, right? However, remembering that love is a verb can make it a bit more complicated Action is required. Where do I start? Perhaps taking time to reassure children who are confused and frightened could instill confidence and peace of mind. Possibly listening with patience to those of another generation who don't share your opinions could exemplify tolerance and acceptance. It may be that exploring the role of faith and prayer in finding solutions could strengthen bonds and provide comfort. These and all other expressions of love just might spread and result in infusing positive messages into this time so filled with negativity. After all, charity begins at home, and scripture tells us that it never ends.

Grant,O God, that your holy and life-giving spirit may so move every human heart that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions be healed, and we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. BCP Prayer for Social Justice
