God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.
The Lord of host is with us…
…Be still and know I am God.
-Psalm 46:1-4,11
We know that we are called to” love our neighbor” (Mark 12:31) and “walk in love” and do “good works” (Ephesians 5:2, 2:10). We are to care for the hungry, sick, and strangers. (Matthew 25:31-45) Today, there are so many people who are hurting and need care: in Ukraine and in the Middle East (especially Gaza); immigrants being arrested who are not criminals but doing good work in construction, gardening, housecleaning, etc.; and many others in our communities who are losing jobs, child care, access to food, medical care, and so on. Sometimes the turmoil of pain around us can feel like mountains falling and waters raging. What are we—who are called “to walk in love” and be God’s “hands and feet in the world” (St. Teresa of Avila)--to do?
Fortunately, each of us as individuals can know we are not the only “hands and feet of God in the world”! The many of us can try to discern our contributions. And, we are grateful that the “Holy Spirit will teach (us) all things…” and be with us “always, even to the end of the age.” (John 14:26; Matthew 28:20) As Carl Jung put it, “Bidden or not, God is with us.”
The key is to be open to God, to listen… and hear… As the Psalmist wrote: “Be still…and know..”

Dear God, Before and in our busy activities, please help us to be open to your presence and guidance—and grateful that you can be “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Amen.
