Be Open and Feel Our Connection with You

30Sep

When I consider your heavens,
 the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have set in place,
What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
 -Psalm 8: 3-4

But ask the animals, and they will tell you,
or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you,
or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

 -Job12:7-10

It is awesome—and humbling—to learn that the universe contains billions of galaxies each with billions of stars. Our Milky Way galaxy is understood as an average galaxy and has 100-400 billion stars---of which our sun and its solar system is only one.

Similarly, we learn that our earth began 4.5 billion years ago, and it took a billion years for the first cells of life to appear. Over hundreds of millions of years the earth’s geology has gone through many different eras and epochs with many different life-forms. Although our human ancestors (hominids) appeared about 4 million years ago, we homo sapiens only began about 200,000 years ago.

Here we are in our moments of time, on the present Earth, in the vast universe—and we can (and do) wonder about our existence and significance. I find it meaningful that we are part of the earth and have kinship with it and its other creatures—that somehow we are a part of the Divine creation and its process.  We are linked with everything through the air we share--the breath that we must have from our births to our deaths. Perhaps this is the Holy Spirit in which we “live and move and have our being.”  When we are open to this connection with the ocean, trees, flowers, birds, sunsets, stars (and all!) then we may feel in God’s hands and care.

Musical Reflection - Anthem - Paul Halley

Dear God, please help us to be open to and feel our connection with you. Amen.
