Children

12Feb
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.’ And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

-Mark 10:13-16

One of the most endearing portions of our services is when the children return to the congregation from Godly Play. It is not an interruption of corporate worship, but a literal renewal and rejuvenation of the Body of Christ, we, the people of God.

Particularly touching are those times when the children are called forth to be blessed by our priest.

A model for parents, indeed, all parishioners, the Priestly Blessing from the Hebrew Scriptures -- perhaps the oldest Biblical text, found on ancient amulets and bands -- is one we might well recall when squealing and giggling kids return to our fold.

"May the LORD bless you, and keep you;

May the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;

May the LORD lift up His face to you, and give you peace." Amen.
