Depart, O Christian Soul

18Feb
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
 -Romans 8:38-39

On a recent Sunday at Touro, a nurse stopped me as I exited an Episcopalian patient’s room. At first, I feared I had done something wrong, but instead, she urgently pointed me toward another room down the hall. The patient inside was dying, under DNR orders, and wanted to receive communion.

I hesitated for a moment before stepping into the dimly lit room, where a frail elderly woman lay in bed. Her eyes were unfocused, her skin hung loosely from her bones, and she clutched a bowl to catch the mucus spilling from her mouth. I have never been comfortable with the sight of suffering, and for a moment, I felt completely unprepared. But I gripped my prayer sheet and read aloud, clinging to the familiar words.

As I prayed, she reached for my hand and locked eyes with me. When the prayer ended, I struggled to find the right words in the face of her suffering. I did my best to reassure her that God was with her, praying for her peace and comfort. Her breath was shallow, her voice difficult to understand, but I heard her say, "I am ready for Him to take me."

For a few more minutes, we remained there—her eyes searching mine, her hand gripping mine—as I did my best to stay present, resisting the urge to look away from her suffering. I pray that, in those moments, she felt the presence of God.

I am grateful that we have the opportunity to bring God’s love to those we encounter at Touro, even those not on our “list” for the day. And I am especially grateful that we can be present for those who are alone, suffering, and facing death.

I pray that God continues to give us the courage to serve, the compassion to meet suffering with love, and the faith to trust in His presence in all things.

Depart, O Christian soul, out of this world;

In the Name of God the Father Almighty who created you;

In the Name of Jesus Christ who redeemed you;

In the Name of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies you.

May your rest be this day in peace,

  and your dwelling place in the Paradise of God. Amen.
