Earth is sacred.

They forgot what he had done, and the wonders he had shown them. He worked marvels in the sight of their forefathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He split open the sea and let them pass through; he made the waters stand up like walls. He led them with a cloud by day, and all the night through with a glow of fire. He split the hard rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as from the great deep. He brought streams out of the cliff, and the waters gushed out like rivers.
- Psalm 78:1, 12-16

The earth is a mighty and powerful thing In our Wednesday Bible Study we are reading the book “Sacred Soul, Sacred Earth” by John Phillip Newell. It is teaching the Celtic beliefs that sacredness is found within the earth, and within each creature on this earth. As we read, I believe that our spiritual journey is to uncover the sacredness that gets buried when living in this world. John Phillip Newell writes “Thus, the crises that we are in the midst of today, whether ecological, political or societal, stem from the fact that we treat the earth and one another as less than sacred.” Sacred, he writes, “points with reverence to the divine essence of life and the true nature of relationship.” Sacred means showing ultimate respect.

Earth is sacred. Much is written about the feeling of connection felt when hiking in the mountains or watching a sunset. All so true! I wonder what we can do to fiercely protect this earth? How can we best show ultimate respect to this sacred earth?

As each day begins, I (try to) challenge myself to keep the word “sacred” in the forefront of my mind. How can I show ultimate respect to all that I encounter each day? A tall order, but what an important thing to strive for. Let us not forget the wonders that God has shown us.

Musical Reflection - Lullaby from the Great Mother Whale - Paul Winter

Awake, O my soul, snd know that you are born of the earth. Awake to your love for her, sown like a seed in the womb of your beginnings. Honor her, protect her, cherish and adore her. Awake, O my soul, and know that you are born of the earth.
- John Philip Newell
