There is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart of the wicked;
There is no fear of God before his eyes.
He flatters himself in his own eyes
That his hateful sin will not be found out.
The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;
He has left off acting wisely and doing good.
He thinks up wickedness upon his bed
And has set himself in no good way;
He does not abhor that which is evil.
Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens,
And your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,
your justice like the great deep;
You save both man and beast, O Lord.
-Psalm 36: 1- 7
Definitions of evil seem to fall short of the real meaning. But I think you know it when you see it. I have heard news commentators refer to a perpetrator as the face of evil. Bryan Kohberger, who violently stabbed to death four University of Idaho students, fits my understanding of evil. He just pled guilty, giving no motive. I truly don’t understand. Put a “D” in front. Does the devil crush a person’s soul?
Psalm 36 really stood out to me today when I read the paper. It fits. Bryan really thought he could get away with it.
Have I ever experienced evil personally? I don’t think I have. But I know it is out there.
Prayers offer comfort and reassurance. We say the Lord’s Prayer, “Deliver us from evil.” Or Psalm 23 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me . . .” Psalm 36 also offers assurance of a greater force for good.
Musical Reflection- Nothing to Fear: The Porter's Gate featuring Audrey Assad
Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens,
And your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,
your justice like the great deep;
You save both man and beast, O Lord. Amen.
