Feast of Michael and All Angels

29Sep
The Lord looks down from heaven upon us all,
to see if there is any who is wise,
if there is one who seeks after God.
-Psalm 14:2

Today is the Feast of Michael and all Angels, popularly called Michaelmas. St Michael is one of the principal angelic warriors, protector against the dark of the night and the Archangel who fought against Satan and his evil angels. On this day, we give thanks for the many ways in which God's loving care far exceeds our ability to

comprehend the ways in which that care is experienced. It can be tempting to forget what and who we are meant to be for one another, as witnesses to the God within all of creation.

I am reminded today of a wonderful gift in my life…..my good friend, Michael, a college friend who re-emerged in my life many years later as a spiritual mentor and inspiration.  He was serious and wise, gentle and kind, a man of commitment and faith who sought out opportunities to talk about profound and important matters of faith and truth.  He was surely “one who seeks after God”.  He was challenging and provocative and brilliant and he enriched my faith and my life in deep ways.  Michael’s time on earth was far too short, and I often wish I had written down the themes of the many conversations Jerry and I shared with him.  I am grateful, when I think of him, of God’s loving care in sharing him with us.

I wonder how each of us--not only by our professions of faith, but more importantly by how we implement our “seeking after God” in the actions of our lives—might have a profound influence on someone’s else’s life even when we’re not aware of it. I hope that Michael knows how profoundly he influenced mine and so many others.

God of faithfulness, help me to remember what it means to experience your loving care through the people you put in my path. Help me to show through my actions that I am one who “seeks after God” when you place me in the path of others. Amen.
