Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as all his ancestors had done…Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign; he reigned for three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his father had done.”
-2 Kings 23:36-37; 24:8-9
The idea of generational traumas/curses and generational blessings/legacies have been in the common lexicon for literally, generations, but it’s an idea that I’ve been studying with fervor since I have had children of my own. It’s fascinating to me to think about generations ahead of me who made wise choices that enabled me to be where I am today, and equally as fascinating to see younger generations repeating the same struggles as their older parents and grandparents.
I read this idea recently: “When people talk about traveling to the past, they worry about radically changing the present by doing something small, but barely anyone in the present really thinks that they can radically change the future by doing something small.”
I’ve been committed to the idea of breaking generational curses and traumas for some time now, but the above quote really resonated with me because too often, I focus on the mistakes of the past instead of focusing on how I can create a generational blessing and legacy.
Today’s challenge from me is to simply ask God (while you listen to some fabulous David Bowie in quiet contemplation): God, which generational curses are you calling me to break? God, which generational legacies are you calling me to create? God, which generational traumas are you calling me to break? God, which generational blessings are you calling me to create?
Musical Reflection - Changes - David Bowie
God, lead me in discerning what a generational curse is that I can break. Thank you for leading me towards generational legacies that I can create. Amen.
