May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us.
- Psalm 67:1
God is in the pause. In 12 step recovery, letting in a power greater than yourself is the first of the steps…
We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
Admitting powerlessness is accepting the reality and the truth of what is and surrendering to a power greater than ourselves.
All of these words - powerless, surrender, accept - can imply a weakness that keeps many from adopting the principle necessary to let go of our will, whether over alcohol or anything in life that is causing suffering.
In Michael Singer’s latest book, Living Untethered, he describes the pause as the place where we just look at what is in front of us without meaning, back story, or intention. What is in front of us, what we see with our eyes (and I paraphrase here) is a bunch of atoms connecting together to form an object.
If you stop to think about how these particles have come together to form a flower or even a car that cuts you off on the road, your reaction to them may be different. This is where “the pause” can come in handy.
With God in the pause, we can ground ourselves in the present moment, acknowledging all that is in front of us has been given meaning we have placed upon it and let go of the possibility of having control or asserting our will. Invite God in, take a moment to connect with the power greater than yourself, and move forward with intention. The St. Francis prayer, the Peace Prayer, reminds us how to do this.
