God's Glory

The Pharisees they did not confess [their belief in Jesus], for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.


-John 12:42-43


The word glory can sound grand or even old-fashioned to us, something associated with victory, splendor, or heavenly radiance. But at core, earthly glory is really about approval, praise, recognition, status, and acceptance we receive from the people around us.


None of those things is intrinsically bad. We all want to be respected and loved. The danger comes when the desire for human approval comes in conflict with making choices based on what we know deep down is true. The Pharisees John describes were not lacking belief; they were lacking the courage to let that belief shape their public lives. They knew what they thought was right, but the cost of saying so seemed too great. That temptation is as contemporary as ever. How often do we measure ourselves by what others think of us, or quietly adjust our convictions in order to preserve our place, our reputation, or our comfort… to “look good” instead of actually “doing good.”


 “Glory that comes from God” is something very different. It is not applause. It is the deep assurance that our lives are rooted in the utter conviction that we are known, loved, and called by God. Human glory is fleeting. God’s glory is timeless and invites us into a steadier life, one in which our worth does not depend on the whims of the crowd, and our choices are shaped by our faith in God’s love and our desire to reflect that love to others.


The greatest truth is that when we live as reflections of God’s love, all earthly glory fades in importance to us, freeing us from that chase for approval and popularity, and bringing a peace that passes understanding not amount of human applause can ever provide.

Gracious God. Help us to trust that we are good enough just as we are, because we are made in your image, such that we do need to seek approval or praise but can rest in the conviction that your way is the way of everlasting life. Amen.
