Healing from afar

14May
When he went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him, ”Sir,” he said, “my servant is lying at home paralyzed and in great pain.” Jesus said to him, “I will come myself and cure him.” The centurion replied, “Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, ‘Go,’ and he goes; to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.   .  .  And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go back ,then; let this be done for you as your faith demands.” And the servant was cured at that moment.
-Matthew 8:5-9, 13

In one of the daily office readings for today, we have a story of faith and healing. The centurion is confident that Jesus can heal from a distance.

How often are we confronted with moments when we are unable to be with loved ones in pain? There are many reasons; distance, our own health, the patient’s need for privacy . . . It is then that we remember Jesus and the centurion. Jesus is touched by our love and will hear our plea and will be with our beloved in ways we cannot imagine.

Musical Reflection - Yo-Yo Ma - Bach Cello Suite in G. No. 1

O God, the source of all health: So fill my heart with faith in

your love, that with calm expectancy I may make room for

your power to possess me, and gracefully accept your

healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
