How good do I have to be to earn salvation?

25Jun
Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, ‘Then who can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.’
-Matthew 19:23-30

The lectionary for this week is hard for me. Its Old Testament passages emphasize the power of God, his judgments on the wicked. As a person who came of age in the rebellious 1960s, our generation thought we had stamped out judgmentalism. But as the Collect for Purity and the Great Confession remind me each week, I too am wicked.

But I like to believe that it is Christ’s mercy, not God’s judgment, that help guide my actions, quick to respond with my own judgmentalism, to greater concordance with Christ’s teaching and love. But how open am I to Christ’s messages, whether delivered from the pulpit or manifested by people whom I admire?

How good do I have to be to earn salvation? I, who fear the judgment of my peers, may be scared witless of God’s judgment. For me there seems to be an answer in “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” It is impossible for us to earn salvation, but it is possible that the love of Jesus Christ can give us the grace of salvation.

Dear God, help us pray for the openness of our hearts to your teaching. Help us accept your judgements as evidence of your confidence in our ability to mature into the souls you will welcome into your kingdom at the end of our days. Amen.
