Judgement

04Aug
Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister?
Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister?
For we all stand before the judgment seat of God.
For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
And every tongue shall give praise to God.”
So then, each of us will be accountable to God.

-Romans 14:10-12

Hmmm, this one made me sit and think: passing judgment on others, despising others? No, I don’t do that! I don’t judge others. Well, then, how about despising my brother or sister? No, of course not, not me! But as I sat with this, the truth came to me. Yes, I do. I constantly do this when I compare myself to others, when I find them better or worse than me. If they are better then that means I should be a better person, better at whatever the comparison was: smarter, better looking, more successful, kinder, more generous, a better Christian. Or, especially recently, they are worse than me, just plain wrong and should change, become better Christians, believe what I think, as if I know what is right. Either way I am judging and at some level I am despising my brother or sister. And for that I will be held accountable. So today, I pray instead that I can leave the judging to God and simply give praise so that my heart will be filled with the love that passes all understanding, for all of us.

Merciful Christ, when the comparing mind comes up, let me find the kind words and actions of my heart. Amen.
