If the Lord had not been on our side,
let Israel now say;
If the Lord had not been on our side,
when enemies rose up against us;
Then would they have swallowed us up alive
in their fierce anger toward us;
Then would the waters have overwhelmed us
and the torrent gone over us;
Then would the raging waters
have gone right over us.
Blessed be the Lord!
he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler;
the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the Name of the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
-Psalm 124
It most likely doesn’t take a great deal of time to think of a moment in your life when things were a bit challenging. In fact, most of us can think of several examples of when we struggled with life, or even questioned our faith because of a particular situation. It is easy to let fear or darkness get the upper hand when this happens. And yet, we are often reminded in scripture that we should not fear. That of course, is not always as easy as it sounds. However, for all the struggles and questioning, we can all attest to the fact that the Lord has indeed always been on our side. Always walking with us in the midst of trouble. The appointed psalm for today expresses this beautifully, and it is a great reminder that in the end, we proclaim that our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

Living God, let me praise your name for your steadfast love. Help me remember that you have always been as near as a breath to offer your strength and comfort. Amen.
