Magnify God's Love

18Oct
Mary said,“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
-Luke 1:46-47

Often to non-Christians, Christianity can seem like one that is dominated by the goal of conversion. Many Christians see it as their duty to go out into the world and convince others to join their religion. While introducing people to the love of God is a noble goal, the methods by which people do this can sometimes be described as problematic. I remember when I was at the Episcopal Youth Event several years ago in Philadelphia I heard a priest from the Diocese of Long Island talk about how she grew up running away from a group of Christians who would show up to school with a list of names of the souls they would save. Her name was always on that list. As she grew to know people in the church better she learned the truth that our faith, when done right, is all about love. Instead of going out into the world with lists of souls to save, what if each of us magnified God’s love. In every encounter with someone, we can channel God’s love. People will see a difference between us and others, and they may wonder how you can be so joyous, so at peace, and so loving.

This passage from St. Luke shows how Mary used herself to magnify the Lord. Mary served God in ways that most of us will never even come close to experiencing, and her devotion and words serve as reminders for how we can live. I try to allow the love of God to shine through me, and hopefully to illuminate the lives of others. Beyond that, I strive to rejoice in God, to be grateful for what he has given me, and to praise him and his creation. Through this I know that I am truly letting him be a part of me.

Musical Reflection - Magnificat anima mea - John Rutter, The Cambridge Singers, City of London Sinfonia

Dear God, I pray that we remember the actions of your servant, Mary, and that we take her words to heart. Let us allow our souls to magnify you. Let us not seek to force you on others, but to show them that life with you is a new way to live. Let us be loving to all, and thankful for what you have given us. My spirit rejoices in you, oh Lord! Amen.
