Remember your word to your servant,
because you have given me hope.
This is my comfort in my trouble,
that your promise gives me life.
-Psalm 119: 49-50
Charles Martin wrote in his book When Crickets Cry that “Hope is not the result of medicine or anything that science has to offer. It is a flower that sprouts and grows when others pour water upon it.” I love this image of hope as a communal gift that we share with one another. We cannot fully manufacture it alone. In Psalm 119 the psalmist acknowledges that it is through God’s enduring Word that he or she is able to flourish and find comfort in their life. Just as God’s Word brings comfort, hope, and meaning to us, so too can we, as living members of that Word, bring comfort and hope to our family, friends, and neighbors. It can be as simple as a gentle word or a listening ear. So today I wonder where will I see a flower in need of water, a flower that needs just a little something from me in order to find hope and flourish?
Musical Reflection - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Gracious God, as I begin this day, I ask for your guidance. Open my eyes to see your presence in all whom I meet. Help my heart to receive your love and to share that love with others so that I may be a true reflection, indeed a “watering can”, of the hope and love that through You lives in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
