The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it,
the world and all who dwell therein.
-Psalm 24:1
We’ve always known our planet was struggling, since we knew we had a planet. However, in more recent years, it can feel impossible to avoid the pressure of an incoming environmental collapse brought on by human hands. This is especially prevalent in young people, like myself; those of us set to inherit this world, and thus tasked with ‘fixing’ it.
I would like to write to give some advice to those of us struggling with the looming anxiety of global warming, and share some of my own tips for reconnecting with the earth.
The first might seem simple, but can be very favorable not only for the earth, but also one’s own mental health. Take walks. Really! If you are feeling a particular sense of pressure in your office chair, try getting up, and reconnect with all of God’s greens! If you need some motivation, you can try what is called a ‘rainbow walk’. Go outside, and don’t come back until you’ve spotted and cataloged something red, orange, yellow, etc. While you’re out there, if you spot some litter on your road, why not pick it up? There! Now not only are you helping your own wellbeing, but you are taking steps to improve the wellbeing of your own mother earth.
In these times, it can be difficult to keep an optimistic view of the world, what with our high rates of media consumption forcing us to bear witness to everything we could have ever imagined. However, I promise, as long as you stay mindful and strive to take care of this world that God has so graciously let us borrow, a better future can become achievable.
Musical Reflection - Brother Sun (Giving Glory) - The Porter's Gate
We give you thanks, most gracious God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; for the richness of mountains, plains, and rivers; for the songs of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We praise you for these good gifts, and pray that we may safeguard them for our posterity. Grant that we may continue to grow in our grateful enjoyment of your abundant creation, to the honor and glory of your Name, now and for ever. Amen.
