The Alpha and the Omega

28Oct
I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
-Revelation 1:8

This may be one of the most well-known lines of scripture, and for me it is one of the hardest to wrap my mind around. Is Jesus, saying Jesus/God existed before anything else, and will exist until there is nothing else left? My question has always been, “How can something come into existence out of nothing?” This was my question the first time I saw the mind-blowing Pillars of Creation photographed by the James Webb telescope. I don’t even understand what the Pillars of Creation are, but the images always cause me to imagine the beginnings of everything-the beginning of God.

This time when I read the verse, I decided to look at it differently. If God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, what does that mean for my individual little life? I think it means I am called to look at everything I do from this perspective: let my first thoughts, evaluations, words and actions center around God, and let my last thoughts, evaluations, words and actions do the same. In looking at a difficult problem, I can ask myself, “How would a person of deep faith look at this situation? What would a person whose life is God-centered do in this situation?” Perhaps WWJD is a real question and not just a slogan for gift shop tchotchkes. It is certainly a challenge to let God be at the beginning and the end of everything I think, say and do. To do it, I definitely need God’s help AND the help of trusted and faithful friends and mentors.

Loving God, Creator of all that is and all that will ever be, help me remember to look to You and then to let go and allow You to guide my thoughts, words and actions.  Amen.
