The mystery of the Holy Trinity

13Jun
And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

 -Matthew 28:18-20

Almighty God, you have revealed to your Church your eternal Being of glorious majesty and perfect love as one God in Trinity of Persons: Give us grace to continue steadfast in the confession of this faith, and constant in our worship of you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; for you live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen.

-Of the Holy Trinity from the book of Common Prayer

The words of the poet, John Knoepfle, may resonate with some of us: “you lose faith today and tomorrow,… if only a little by a little,…I don’t know any more what country I am in…”. Whether in our faith, families, relationships or communities, we have had the experience of losing our bearings and not knowing where we are.

Mathew tells us there is a way forward if we follow the path of Jesus. What could be more comforting than His words, “And remember, I am with you always, till the end of the age.”

If we are indeed pilgrims on our faith journey seeking direction, then our faith in Holy Trinity will show us the way. The Prayer of the Holy Trinity tells us what we will find if we are attentive and alert, “God has revealed His glorious majesty and perfect love” in the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We can find comfort in the reassurance that our road is known by those who have travelled in faith before us. If we feel trapped in despair and loss, instead of being alone, we know that God created our world. He manifests his love through his Son who shows us the way and gives us the grace of the Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith, steadfast on our life journey, in the perpetual flow of His love.

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, we give thanks for the mystery of the Holy Trinity, for the gift of creation, faith and grace, forever and ever, Amen.
