The stone that the builders rejected

03Dec
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

 - Luke 20:17

Forecasting the future is extraordinarily difficult, even for professionals. A great example is the NFL draft: unbelievable amounts of money and time are spent by the best football minds in the world studying prospects every year to try to choose the best players for each team, trying to predict who will be future stars.

In 2021, Brock Purdy was a good but not spectacular quarterback for the Iowa State Cyclones. When the 2022 NFL draft rolled around in April, 261 players were chosen over several days, with each team selecting seven players. No one chose Purdy.

With the very last pick of the draft, the San Francisco 49ers settled for Purdy, assigning him the role of third string quarterback. In NFL slang, being selected last in the draft (instead of just signing him to a contract outside of the draft) dubs the selected player “Mr. Irrelevant.” Rejected stone indeed.

As luck would have it, the 49ers’ first and second string quarterbacks were each sidelined by injuries and Brock was called upon in his rookie year. He won all five regular-season games that he started, playing a key role in the 49ers' ten-game winning streak, securing a division title and a berth in the NFC Championship game. Purdy continued as the 49ers' starting quarterback in the 2023 season, where he led them to a repeat division title and led the league in multiple passing categories, taking his team all the way to Super Bowl LVIII. Purdy also set the franchise's single-season passing yards record and was named to his first Pro Bowl.

You gotta think all of the other teams wish they had not rejected this superstar.

We judge people every day, some of whom we know well, others not so much. Jesus was, of course, the Cornerstone of Everything, rejected by the religious authorities of his time, and even by one of his 12 closest friends. When we judge, exclude, and reject another child of God, we are closing a door – and, I believe, working against the will of God.

Everyone is deserving of respect and love – including those most different than us, even those we don’t like. Let us pray for the grace to love others, even when we don’t feel like it.

Gracious God, Lover of all that is. Help us to follow the model of thy son and open our hearts to all. Amen
