True Purpose

22Jan
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
                          -Romans 8:28

In our closing Eucharistic Prayer at the 8 o'clock service, we ask for God to assist us in doing all such good works as he has prepared for us to walk in. As I say these words, I question if I have lived my life failing to seek and recognize the good works intended for me. I see others whose significant accomplishments and contributions are obvious and, through their works, positive and lasting differences have been made. They seem to have found a clear path to follow while I have wandered, sometimes stopping along the way and often changing course. Have I missed my chance to fulfill my purpose?

A dear friend sent me an anonymous writing that has helped me to take another look at my dilemma. It says in part, “Your problem is that you equate your purpose with goal-based achievement. The universe isn't interested in your achievements.....just your heart. When you choose to act out of kindness, compassion and love, you are already aligned with your true purpose. No need to look any further.”

So, although I may never write that book, found that school, or compose that hymn, it is never too late to live a life filled with consideration of and, above all, love for others. As to our good works, Paul addresses that concern in a letter to the Philippians. He wrote, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to conclusion at the day of Jesus Christ.” What wonderfully comforting words, Thanks be to God!

Now all glory to God, who is able through his mighty power

at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more

than we might ask or think. Amen.
