Wilderness of Renewal

12Sep
This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
  make his paths straight.”
-Matthew 3:2-3

“Vox clamantis in deserto” is a phrase connected to preparing a way for God to act in new and surprising ways. “Wilderness” is not geography; it is the space where we can learn to trust again - stripped of comforts, waiting on manna, and intently listening for the voice of God. It is the silence that buzzes with the potential to restore faith and calm hearts.

Next month, my husband and I will leave New Orleans to begin a new chapter in Anchorage, Alaska. We’re trading our dynamic city full of character and celebration for a place where one of the highlights of the year is an ice worm festival. The familiar rhythms of daily life and the warm faces of friends will give way to winter’s quiet and the sublime solitude of the Last Frontier. The light, the silence, and the seasons will all be dramatically different, yet I sense the potential of this wilderness to become a space for renewal and deeper faith. I am hopeful that in Alaska I will discover new community—both among people and in creation—and become more attentive to the light and love of God that surrounds me everywhere.

I’m also terrified of this harsh, yet beautiful, landscape ahead. The uncertainty of change looms darkly on my horizon, but it is comforting to know that, whether I’m on Bayou St. John or in the Chugach Mountains, God is already calling out to me, preparing a way, and guiding me to the path.

I hope you will keep me in your prayers, as I will keep you in mine.

Gracious God, You call us to follow you into the wilderness. Grant us the courage to leave what we know and the faith to trust the incredible potential of what lies ahead. In the silence, help us be attentive to your light and love. And when You cry out, open our hearts to Your message. Amen.
