Understanding the 27 Enneagram Types
through the lens of the Instinctual Subtypes
Instincts are energy for the support of life. All mammals have three central instincts: survival, sexual, belonging. Our work as humans is to harmonize these animal energies and balance them so they flow and integrate. When this occurs, then a fourth instinct arises: the instinct for enlightenment.
Without our knowing, these energies become distorted and tamped down. Yet, when the instincts are liberated and integrated, they support our spiritual development.
In this workshop, the learning will engage these three instincts: Survival, Sexual, and Belonging. Our ego structure, or Enneagram type, distorts these instincts and they appear as self-preservation (wanting more, but never having enough), sexual or one-to-one (want more of the desire to feel alive and creative), and social (want more of group participation and approval). Our dominant subtype is where our neurotic grasping lies.
Through dyad inquiry, small group discussions, and experiential exercises, we’ll consider how these three operate in our lives and how they become release valves for the vice of our Enneagram type.
