"The night is far gone, the day is near.
Let us then lay aside the works of darkness
And put on the armour of light."

-Romans 3:12

Every morning most of us ask the same question. What should I wear? We know our clothing can say a great deal about us. It can reflect age, attitude, socioeconomic status, and in some cases, choice of religion. It takes time and consideration to select the days ensemble. Scripture tells us that we also have sacred apparel available to us. Isaiah 6:10. “He has clothed me with the garments of salvation; He has covered me with the robes of righteousness.” Galations 3:27, “For those who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ.” Luke 24:49, “To put on the Spirit is to be clothed with the Spirit.”

These passages offer answers to the question, “Spiritually, what should I wear?” Not long ago, John Pitzer preached an inspiring sermon on this subject. Since then I have been giving it a lot of thought. I have read many helpful verses and commentaries that offer suggestions and guidelines. I have also concluded that, just as I find individual ways to express myself through what I have on, I can find unique ways to portray my faith when I choose to clothe myself in Christ. What I have experienced, what I have learned, and what gifts I have been given will make the colors and pattern of my mantle distinct, yet hopefully, recognizable. I have come to realize that in order to wear it well I need to focus on what is in my heart, not what is in my closet. I need to pay more attention to how I am reflecting my Christian faith, not how I am mirroring style.

Of this I am certain. When I choose to clothe myself in Christ, the fit will be perfect, and I will be appropriately dressed for any occasion.

"Heavenly Father, Give us the strength and wisdom to put on Your armour and to remember the words of Your servant Paul. Therefore as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Amen."
-Colossians 3:12-14
