Inspired by Christ, Trinity Episcopal Church strives to love our neighbors, do justice, and walk humbly with God.

Up above the ceiling in our Trinity Church is an intricate structure of beams and stone that have been damaged by the hurricanes to the extent that in early June we have to move out of not only the sanctuary but also the offices below so repairs can be made. I’m going to miss being inside the worship part of our building for possibly over a year.

I am quite attached to our gorgeous Trinity Church sanctuary. I have many moments of contemplative quiet and peace here. I receive strength and holiness in Communion, power and purpose in sermons, solace and joy in the music, wonder and tranquility in the beauty of the space. During difficult times of my life I find love and acceptance in the pews. Here I was married to the most wonderful woman in my life! Here I am part of a family that is “inspired by Christ ... to love our neighbors, do justice, and walk humbly with God.”

I know that the building is not the church – just like my body is not the real me. But buildings and bodies are important nonetheless.

So I have decided to pray for the building that houses our worship and spiritual sustenance ….. just like I pray for the body that houses me or my loved ones. I ask God to heal its bones and put it back together in the right way. I pray for the men and women who are designing its repair and for the safety of those doing the labor. I pray for our clergy and others who are leading us who are the church during this time. When I pray for a friend’s healing I often touch them. I’ll also lay my hands on our building and ask God to heal and bless it.

We will gather and worship in the chapel and other places on our larger Trinity campus. We’ll learn in other locales. God continues to nurture, bless, and guide us in different ways.

I think it’s significant that this renewal of our worship space is comes as we give thanks for 175 years as the Trinity Episcopal Church family and dedicate ourselves for the next 175 years …. inspired by Christ, “to love our neighbors, do justice, and walk humbly with God.”

Musical Reflection - O Trinity of Blessed Light - Choirs of St. Paul's Washington D.C.

O God our heavenly Father who has given us your son, Jesus Christ, to be our friend and elder brother, grant that we may continue in this friendship and do such things as will please him. Bless us in our work and in our play. Make us gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave. Keep us in purity of heart and let the life of our school go on from strength to strength to find its place and meaning in your kingdom. All this we ask in the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
