Love grows and gives rise to more love—and this is nurturing for all within it.

Here is an example from our archives:

He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?
It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden;
and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”
—Luke 13:18–19

This parable is wonderful and encouraging! In many teachings, Jesus emphasizes that the way of God is love, and we are invited to participate in this way of being. Here, we are shown that when we love, love grows and gives rise to more love—and this is nurturing for all within it. Love is generative and beneficial—to others and ourselves.

However, we often realize that “being loving” is complicated and much easier to say than to practice. What is involved in loving?

In The Art of Loving, Erich Fromm wrote that love involves sensitivity to others and “active concern for the life and growth of that which we love.” In accord with St. Paul’s urging, may we have love as our aim and pray for God’s help.

Dear God, help us to aim to love, and help us to do so. Amen.
