This past week, we spent some time in the Trinity vault, perusing old photographs, records, and various oddities deemed worthy of preserving. I’ve been at Trinity only fifteen years, and I found the memories thick and close enough to touch.
I recognized so many faces from the years before I became a Trinity member, including many who have passed on to the congregation in the clouds. It felt oddly like flipping through an old family photo album.
I saw younger versions of my mentors, their passionate endeavors, familiar gatherings of prayer and service, and lots of smiles. Friends and families were grouped together around tables or in pews, in costumes or at meetings. There are so many pictures of our floral arrangements—and they’re as grand as ever!

There are more stories than anyone can recount—but we must do our best to remember.
I’m 43, and I’m already nostalgic for Trinity. My life is happening beside all of you, with all of you, our lives forever intertwined by the faith and legacy we share here.
I start to imagine what the Trinity vault photos will tell of my story in the next 30 years—who I’ll be standing beside, what causes I’ll champion and serve, and what joys and sorrows I’ll encounter. What will I think of my haircut?
There are so many photos yet to be taken.
We are in yet another “time of transition.” Over nearly 180 years, there have been many.
We have to remember the stories and write worthy new ones—inspired by the love of Christ.
The older I get, the more I believe that time without transition doesn’t exist. We’re always moving away from one thing into another. I guess it’s just more apparent once in a while.
We will soon kick off the public phase of the rector search, when our parish profile is “live” and applications to be the new rector of Trinity Church will come pouring in.
We’re eagerly seeking a dynamic new leader to be part of our story, but we must not forget: we are also being eagerly sought after.
Trinity is the prize—and it is a privilege to be part of this story. For all of us.
And with privilege comes great responsibility. (Or was that power, Spider-Man?) We have to remember the stories and write worthy new ones—inspired by the love of Christ.
What stories and photos will you stash in the Trinity vault?
