Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”
- Matthew 6:25
There was a song that came out in 1988 by Bobby McFerrin that was one of the great “earworms” of all time: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!’
Here’s a little song I wrote,
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry
Be happy
It’s a peppy, whistle-ready tune that just makes you happy singing it, and was my go-to song as a pick-me-up for many years until another wonderful musician Pharrell Williams released Happy in 2013. If you haven’t yet seen the video for Happy, you are in for a treat. (see pink music link below) In it, famous people and regular people in a variety of settings and circumstances manifest joy in a most infectious way.
The video has over 1.5 BILLION views, which I take as clear proof both that people are hungry for joy and that joy can be spread, like a catchy tune or a great idea, simply by showing it.
I am convinced with all that I am that God wants us to be happy, and while life certainly has its struggles and difficulties, life itself is a blessing beyond measure. As Williams says in his song, “Happiness is the Truth!”
Further, that the road to true, lasting happiness is faith, for if we really believe that our God loves us and will be with us through thick and thin, our worries can evaporate, because who we most profoundly ARE is so much more than the cares of the world can diminish.
Musical Reflection - Happy - Pharrell Williams
Loving God, source of all that is good and true, infuse our hearts with your joy that we may spread it to others. Infuse our souls with faith and thereby lift our earthly worries from our hearts that we may abide you peace that passes understanding. Amen.
