Did You Ever Find God on a Waffle House bill?

01Oct

And he answering said
You shall love your God
With all your heart,
And with all your soul,
And with all your strength
And with all your mind;
And your neighbor as yourself
-Luke 10:27

My husband, Philip, is obsessed with Waffle House. On almost every driving trip (that is, any trip north of Baton Rouge) we make a stop at a Waffle House. For us, it’s a 51 year tradition, a pilgrimage in its own way.

So on a recent drive to Highlands, NC, we stopped off at a Waffle House outside a small town in Alabama. When our server, a lovely young African American woman handed us the bill, she wrote just under her name, “Luke 10:27”.

When I saw the biblical reference on the bill, I was gobsmacked. Surely there was a message in this! I quickly Googled “Luke 10:27” and found what is considered the greatest commandment of all. Simply put, we are commanded to love our Lord with all our heart , soul, strength and our neighbor as ourselves.

Our beloved late rector Hill Riddle often said, “God is in the face of every person we meet.” I firmly believe that God is everywhere. We just have to leave ourselves open to finding Him.

Who knew that on that morning in Alabama, we’d find God on our Waffle House bill?

Musical Reflection -Plastic Jesus - Eddie Marrs

Heavenly Father, help us to find you and your eternal love in the face of every person we meet. Help us to return your love with all our might. You are the beginning, the middle and the end of what love is all about. May we share it with others every day of our lives. Amen.
