Everyday

30Jul
And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’

Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.’ In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, “I am God’s Son.” ’ The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.

-Matthew 27:33-44

Wait, it’s not Palm Sunday! We’re supposed to reflect on this Gospel as part of the Passion, our entry to Holy Week. So why are we reading this at the end of July?? It’s so strange to contemplate this appointed Gospel without having prepared throughout Lent. The recounting of Jesus’ pain, agony and humiliation always leaves me with a pit my stomach. Honestly, I’m kinda taken off guard.

But maybe we’re reminded now, in July, that Jesus sacrificed himself for us for EVERYDAY of our lives. Maybe it’s important to remember, while we’re cramming in those last beach visits, our back to school uniform shopping, and in my case, celebrating my oldest’s 21st birthday and preparing to send another kid off to college, that Jesus endured the unthinkable for us, not just for us to grieve on Good Friday and to celebrate His resurrection at Easter, but also to remember and proceed accordingly with every occasion in our lives, everyday. Jesus endured the unthinkable so that we may always find joy and love in the everyday special and mundane.

It is in His dying that we live. Let us everyday be grateful.

Musical Reflection - Everyday - Buddy Holly

Gentle Jesus, thank you for dying for me on the cross, I thank you for your infinite love and sacrifice, and for bestowing undeserved grace upon us by giving us the best gift we could ever receive. Help me to be reminded of this gift and be to grateful everyday. Amen.
