One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, ‘Which commandment is the first of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’ Then the scribe said to him, ‘You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that “he is one, and besides him there is no other”; and “to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength”, and “to love one’s neighbour as oneself”,—this is much more important than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’ When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ After that no one dared to ask him any question.
-Mark 12:28-34
Jesus’ simplest request – “to love one’s neighbour as oneself” – bizarrely gets lost in the minds of many day-to-day. Some use the strategy of bringing people to Jesus out of guilt or fear, but we need to do it by the love we give to others. Jesus’ desire is for us to preach the Gospel and love, to show forgiveness and give hope. If you receive all the love and support possible, that makes you believe that nothing is impossible.
On a similar note, I always enjoyed the definition of sin from Boston College Theology Professor James Keenan’s definition of sin, which is (paraphrasing) that sin is usually not found where people are weak but are trying and struggling, but where people are strong and not bothering. He uses the story of the Good Samaritan to illustrate this, noting that the priest and the Levite simply do not bother, they could help the man but they do not bother. He concludes that for Jesus, sin is a failure to bother to love.
Musical Reflection - Lead Me Lord - Wesley. Chet Valley Church Choir
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim. Amen.
