Therefore my brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
-I Corinthians 15:58
The above verse was quoted by the young Frances Perkins, president of her class at Mount Holyoke at her 1902 graduation ceremony. Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was the first woman appointed to a cabinet position, serving as Secretary of Labor under FDR for twelve years. She was committed to the working class and disenfranchised, and her policies established unemployment insurance, federal laws regarding child labor, minimum wage and maximum hours, and the right to unionize. Thanks to her, the Social Security Act of 1935 became law.
Perkins was raised in the Congregational Church in Boston, but became an Episcopalian in 1905. She maintained a close connection to the All Saints Sisters of the Poor convent in Maryland and made monthly retreats. She depended on her faith, her prayer life, and her church for the support she needed to assist the United States to face its Depression challenges.
Her faith was strongly rooted in the Incarnation, in which God reaches out into the world. God reaches out “into the sin, difficulties, and chaos of New York City and Boston, and the life of the Perkins family, and to me. Serving the secular and worldly life of others, we serve the incarnate life of God.”
In 2009 the Episcopal Church recognized Perkins as a saint and designated today as her feast day to honor her as a Public Servant and Prophetic Witness. It is almost unthinkable to imagine life before the laws that she facilitated. Let us give thanks for her life of service to children, the elderly, and the poor.
Musical Reflection - How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live - Ry
Almighty God, whose prophets hath taught us righteousness in the care of thy poor: By the guidance of thy Holy Spirit, grant that we may do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly in thy sight; through Jesus Christ, our Judge and Redeemer, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God. Amen.
