Fret Not

Do not fret yourself because of evil doers;
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
For the power of the wicked shall be broken'
but the Lord upholds the righteous.

- Psalm 37:1,18

The writer of this psalm tells us not to fret over evil doers. Do not fret over those who prosper because of their evil schemes. Doing so leads to our falling into sin. Yet with so much evil in the world how can we avoid this frustration? The news each day carries stories of sinful acts in our community, our nation and the world. When I read the daily news I often quote from Genesis, "The Lord God saw that every imagination of the mind of man was only evil continually."  This verse lets us know the world doesn't seem to change and human nature has always been the same.

The psalmist also lets us know that eventually the evil will be punished and the good rewarded. God wants us to be patient. We all know it is hard to be patient. But bad people are a part of God's creation. Christ died for all. For evil people it is never too late to change.  The evil in the world is God's problem. I don't have to fret over this issue. I have enough problems on my own. I am much happier when I realize I don't have to solve problems that belong to God. Also I know that God will be the final winner.

Gracious God give us the courage to live in this evil world. Give us hope to find always what is good about the creation. Allow us to have patience and to be aware that our time and God's time are different, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
