Generous Provider

15Jan
Hallelujah!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart
In the assembly of the upright, in the congregation
Great are the deeds of the Lord!
They are studied by all who delight in them.
His work is full of majesty and splendor
And his righteousness endures forever.
He makes his marvelous works to be remembering
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion
He gives food to those who fear him;
He is ever mindful of his covenant.
   -Psalm 111

In this beautiful Psalm the psalmist praises God and all that he does for us. God is the generous provider and welcomes our thanks. He also says that God is the great creator and sustainer of our food sources. Food is a wonderful gift from God, and part of His created order.

Yet, even in this country of astounding abundance, many go to bed hungry. How is it possible that 47 million people in the United States face hunger each day, including 1 in 5 children? In Louisiana, 1 in 4 children face hunger daily. (Feeding America) Food insecurity is the result of poverty, unemployment, cost of living and climate change (Drexel Univ). Hunger is a real and present danger in our country.

Trinity is answering this need each weekday, when small groups of dedicated Loaves and Fishes volunteers meet to make healthy sandwich bags that feed about 150 elderly, at-risk youth and AIDS patients. On each Thursday, an additional group of Trinity volunteers meet at Christ Church Cathedral to prepare a hot meal that is nutritious, delicious and beautiful for 200 hungry souls. Each week, these volunteers are feeding nearly 1000 New Orleanians, and for some this is the only meal they will get that day.

This signature ministry is making a small dent in an enormous problem. But to truly answer God’s call, we need more volunteers, donations of money and food, and drivers (ages 18-65) who can drive our refrigerated truck around the city. If you can help, visit: Trinity Loaves and Fishes.

Trinity cannot possibly feed all the hungry in our city, but we are doing our small part to be a faithful provider in our community. We are answering God’s call to provide for others, one sandwich, one meal at a time.

Gracious God, my heart overflows with praise and gratitude for your works and your steadfast love. Guide our Loaves and Fishes volunteers so they may help the hungriest, the neediest in our community. Help us feed these hungry souls so they–and we–may do your will. Amen.
