"Go and Learn.."

02Jul
Jesus said: “Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
-Matthew 9:13

In this passage, Jesus is responding to Pharisees who question his decision to dine with sinners – tax collectors. His answer might be better interpreted as saying that he prefers to show kindness to those “undesirables” of society, rather than ignore them or demand their strict compliance with the religious rituals of the day. Which approach is more likely to persuade those sinners to answer his call and receive his grace?

Likewise, we should try to answer Jesus’ call by showing kindness to sinners – including ourselves – where we may not have been inclined to show it before. So consider starting today in a simple way: a smile or friendly greeting to the mirror, a family member, a friend, a colleague or a stranger. While we may not always see where it leads, our faith tells us that acts of mercy and grace will follow.

Musical Reflection - Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now

Lord, as you have shown me your mercy, please

remind me to show kindness to all those I meet today. Amen.
