Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; you set me free when I am hard-pressed; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; how long will you worship dumb idols and run after false gods?
Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.
-Psalm 4:1-3
I love the simple, yet urgent cry in this psalm. I encourage you to re-read the first line and think about how it resonates in your life: “answer me when I call, O God”. There have been many times that I have prayed – God, are you there? Can you hear my prayer?
All too often, I feel like I live in a tightly scheduled, time-crunched world where deadlines make me feel rushed and pressured. Dashing from one appointment to the next, pivoting from task to task, I tend to neglect the peaceful, yet most important things in my life: faith, family, health, and relationships. If I can turn to God in prayer, lean into the peace of His presence, I likely will find a true source of calm. But chaotic times are inevitable and those moments that truly unsettle me, the ones that really throw me off balance, are ones that make me pause and anchor myself in my faith, relying on God to help me find the peace. God, are you there? Can you hear my prayer?
Despite all of the noise and turmoil, I strive to seek inner peace and focus on God’s faithfulness. I will always ask God to help me to see His hand in my life, even when things feel too difficult. Psalm 4 is a beautiful reminder that inner peace and security are found not in our success or power, but in our trusting relationship with God. I’ll conclude with this lovely quote: “God’s peace is an unceasing and unconditional gift available to us at all times.” God is near and always hears our prayer.
