Hallelujah!

15Jan
Hallelujah!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart
In the assembly of the upright in the congregation
Great are the deeds of the Lord,
They are studied by all who delight in them.
His word is full of majesty and splendor
And his righteousness endures forever.
-Psalm 111:1-3

I am an early riser, not by choice as it just happens that way. Often, I am awake before the sun comes up and I’m not ready to take on the day in the darkness. During that time, I stay in bed, pray and meditate. The most common theme: thank you God for everything.

In this psalm the psalmist (often thought to be David) calls us to wholehearted worship. It is a call to praise the Lord for his great and everlasting works, faithfulness and love. It is also prayer thanking God for his consistent goodness and power, urging wholehearted praise for his unchanging and just nature.

But where do I begin to thank Him for all I have been given? A stellar 50-year marriage? Amazing adult children and perfect grandchildren (aren’t all grandchildren perfect?) For curing my breast cancer? For a safe and quiet hurricane season? The list is endless. My heart is full of gratitude and grows each day.

So I lie in the dark, wait for the sun to peek through and whisper my prayer of deep, sincere–and yes, wholehearted gratitude. Thank you, God. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Musical Reflection - Hallelujah! - Leonard Cohen

For each new morning with its light

For rest and shelter of the night

For health and food

For love and friends

For everything Thy goodness sends. Amen.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
