Mercy and truth have met together;
Righteousness and peace have kissed.
-Psalm 85:10
Through the years, I have periodically led peacebuilding training workshops with people from around the world, many of whom have deep lived experience of violent conflict and are working to bring sustainable peace with justice in their societies. One of the exercises we sometimes include is a provocative reflection on the competing impulses and priorities in the reconciliation process. A guru in our field, a Mennonite named John Paul Lederach, was inspired by Psalm 85 to develop this activity in which participants personify and hold a lively dialogue among the 4 elements of Mercy, Truth, Peace and Justice [righteousness], each making the case for how they are important to reconciliation, and exploring how they are similar or different from one another. I often like to let people self-select into groups based on which element tugs at them the most. Invariably, Mercy is the tiniest group, while large numbers flock to Justice. To me, this speaks to a deep thirst to set things right, to see righteousness prevail after so much destruction and such grave affronts to human dignity. And yet, by the end of the exercise, most people come to realize that each of these elements has its place. Hard as it is for us to harmonize seemingly contradictory values, God’s grace encompasses hard truths and tender mercy, bold righteousness and steady peace. We all probably gravitate naturally towards one of these energies but may also be limited by this tendency; asking ourselves to consider a situation from another perspective can help to expand our vision just enough to catch a glimpse of what God may be doing in that situation – and how we may be invited to contribute to greater harmony and balance.
Musical Reflection - One Day - Matisyahu
Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it:
a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor;
a world where the riches of creation are shared, and everyone can enjoy them;
a world where different races and cultures live in harmony and mutual respect;
a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love.
Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
