The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
-Psalm 34:18
The recent floods in the Hill Country of Texas have weighed heavy on me, on my mind and on my heart. I have prayed for the families of all who died and for those who are still missing, but especially the young girls at Camp Mystic. I’m sure many of you reading this have a connection, even if it’s distant, to someone affected by the flooding. For me, it was Charlotte, who is the daughter of one of my dearest college friends. By the grace of God, Charlotte is alive, but she went through very scary and rough times and will be forever changed by what she lived through on July 4.
Initially I thought how horrible, how unbearable, this is too much and “why, Lord, why”? I would wake up in the middle of the night, not able to sleep and think about the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, all waiting to hear if their loved one had been rescued. For days I had no words, but I knew that I could lean on scripture and pray.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. – John 1:5
I lift my eyes up to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121: 1-2, 8
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. – Revelation 21:4
Anything is possible as long as you have faith. – Mark 9:23
God, be near us. Comfort the families. Carry the broken. Pour peace and mercy and grace over all of those affected. Surround them with strength and let them know that they are not alone. God is with you. I pray for the rescue teams, strengthen their bodies, guard their minds and place comfort in their hearts. May they find refuge in you when the weight becomes too much to carry.
I now find myself holding my own summer camp memories so tender and close and on the other hand, grieving for the families and children who suffered in the worst way imaginable. Lives have changed in this fragile life we live. We can’t fix this, but we can feel it. We don’t have the answers, but we can hold onto prayer and onto to each other. I pray fervently that our love and prayer is louder than our sorrow.
Musical Reflection - Pass it On - Kurt Kaiser
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work or watch, or weep this night and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend to the sick, Lord Christ, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your loves’ sake. Amen.
