I Will Survive

29Jul
Have mercy on me, Oh God,
For my enemies are hounding me;
All day long they assault and oppress me.
They hound me all day long;
Truly there are many who fight against me, Oh Most High
Whenever I am afraid,
I will put my trust in you.
-Psalm 56:1-3

This beautiful Psalm is the story of David, crying out in grief when the Philistines captured him in Goth. To escape, he feigned madness. Its central theme is David’s unending trust in God, no matter what suffering he may face.

Who among us has had to face his or her fears in life? We all fear something. To some, the sight of a spider, snake or rodent can set off internal alarms. Other fears are more global, like the fear of irrational world leaders and the powers they yield. Or who has sat by the phone waiting for a physician to call with a biopsy report? Fear is real, powerful, and at times crippling. Where can we take these feelings and conquer them?

Psalm 56 says the key to overcoming danger and difficulty is to put your faith and trust in God. This is a conscious decision to rely on God’s powerful, all-knowing, all-loving strength. His guidance and protection will get you through whatever life throws at you.

Let your fears turn into faith and God will lead the way.

Musical Reflection - I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

Lord, I surrender my fears to you. Fill me with peace and courage to face whatever comes my way. Help me to trust in your love and guidance. Lord, replace my fear with your peace. Amen.
