Jesus said “Keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake!
-Mark 13:35 - 37
School started last week, and while one can run on adrenalin for the first couple of days, it is usually this day, the Tuesday of the first full week of school, when the new early-morning routine wallops students and teachers alike. Keep awake indeed!
But just like gearing up for the full and busy days of school is worth the effort in the learning and growth that we cram into each school day, Jesus’ message to his disciples – and to us – is clear: God is speaking, acting, arriving in the world constantly: from cockcrow to midnight. Embrace it!
And this is both a comfort and a challenge. On the one hand, we are never alone; there is no such thing as a truly secular experience, an unspiritual day, if we can just attune our heart to the reality of God With Us. This truth can offer immeasurable comfort in any circumstance if we are open to that Amazing Grace.
AND we can’t be lazy about what that Grace calls us to be and to do and to WORK for change in our broken world so desperately in need of the Good News of Christ. If we sleep through our call to action, we are squandering what God has entrusted to our care.
God shows up – count on it! Do we?
Musical Reflection - The Love of God - Nathan Drake; by Frederick M. Lehman
Gracious and loving God you give us treasure and talents and time to make our return for your unfathomable love; help us to be aware and aware of your presence and call that we may live life abundant in your service. Amen
