Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
-Galatians 5:16-24
With Mardi Gras around the corner, this is a hard one! Mardi Gras, pretty much by reputation and definition, embodies, “The works of the flesh.”
For the past few years, we’ve entertained college kids for Mardi Gras who’ve heard the outrageous stories of Bourbon Street and can’t wait to get to the party.
However, our guests almost always (surprisingly) leave town having experienced the fruits of the Spirit — Love, joy, kindness and loads of generosity. (We’re still working on the self-control part. lol)
My favorite part of carnival is dismantling the Mardi Gras misconceptions. I love the reactions of non-natives when they see the elderly and toddlers on the parade route, the churches and schools open for everyone, and people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds meeting together in the streets for joy. I love to witness and take part in the generosity of those who open their coolers and their homes, welcoming all.
Of course there are those who are here solely to “gratify the desires of the flesh,” but I’m looking forward to another season of Living by the Spirit!

Lord Jesus, thank you for all the good times we’ve had and the good times to come. Please keep all revelers safe this carnival season. In Your name we pray. Amen.
