What does The Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
-Micah 6:8
What does The Lord require of you and me? That is an ever present question. Other ways the question is asked are: What must I do to get into heaven? What must I do to inherit eternal life? I remember a fellow student in college asking: What is the lowest grade I can make on this exam and still pass? Some people look at church attendance in the same way. On the other hand there are those who think God requires great feats from us. Obey all the commandments all the time. Love the unlovable. Give yourself totally to God. Do the impossible.
I have learned over the years that God does not expect the impossible from us. The prophet Micah asked the question and his answer was simple: Justice, mercy, and humility; these things point to the fact that we live in community. How we live with others is extremely important. Sometimes in doing the simple things we can be surprised how God can magnify our efforts. Sometimes the acts of justice, mercy and humility can produce miracles. So keep searching. Keep asking: What does The Lord require? Look for the simple answers.
Musical Reflection - I Want Jesus to Walk with Me - Eric Bibb
Almighty God in all our doubts and uncertainty give us the wisdom to ask what you would have us do; that we may not make faults choices, and that in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
