Love, Joy, Peace, and Patience

13Oct
Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked,
nor lingered in the way of sinners,nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

Their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and they meditate on his law day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; everything they do shall prosper.

It is not so with the wicked;
they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked is doomed.
-Psalm 1

Do we walk “in the counsel of the wicked” or “delight in the law of the Lord”? Seems like a fairly clear choice, so what’s the problem? For me, in the world “out there”, I hear that I am not enough or can’t have “the good life” unless I have a certain car, house or cell phone or a certain amount of money or belong to a certain club or group. “Out there” doesn’t suggest that I “delight” in reading the Bible, or slow down and have more conscious contact with God. I get confused about who and what to pay attention to.

The first Psalm provides some answers. It starts with a negative and tells us what not to do; who not to hang out with; and who not to listen to. For me, this involves change and a moment by moment call to a different awareness and perspective; a different attitude and outlook on life. In examining the people, places and things in my life, are they closer to the watered tree bearing fruit and prospering or are they dying, withering, ungodly and dust in the wind? Do they reflect the fruits of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? (Galatians 5:22). Or do they reflect something else? We can pray for God’s guidance and wisdom to know when to accept certain circumstances and people, and when we need the courage to make a change. We are not alone. We have a companion who wants to be known and who wants to share His life with us. Alleluia!!

Musical Reflection - I Want Jesus to Walk with Me - Eric Bibb

Lord God, creator of all, guide and change our thoughts, desires, hopes, fears, and actions to be more aligned with your word and your ways. Keep us from temptations, from unhealthy advice and associations, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, now and forever. Amen.
