May we hunger for these blessings.

01Nov
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Matthew 5:1-12

The beatitudes are declarations of blessedness spoken by Jesus at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. The Greek word translated "blessed" means happy, blissful, or to be enlarged. Jesus uses the word to refer to more than a superficial happiness. It is a happiness that is rooted deep in our very souls that can enlarge our capacity for gratitude, comfort, and mercy. The kind of blessedness that happens when we open ourselves to the full presence of God.

As we celebrate the feast of All Saints, may God's grace allow us to always hunger for these blessings. As we choose to continue walking as followers of Jesus, may our souls move us to be more righteous and merciful. May our souls move us to comfort those who mourn, and may our souls move us to be peacemakers. A peace that comes from above.

On this All Saints Day, may you be blessed!

Musical Reflection - The Beatitudes - Missa Gaia, Paul Winter Consort

Lord, crack me open and empty my of the things in life that keep me from receiving your bountiful blessings. Fill me with Your mercy, compassion and peace. Amen.
