Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
- Thessalonians 5:16-18
Recently, I saw a picture of a young Trinity student kneeling in daily chapel with her hands clasped together, eyes tightly shut, and appeared to be intensely praying. It was such a sweet moment – I love that it was captured. The photo made me think: she so focused on in her prayers, what was she praying about and what was she asking of God?
Our prayers can be so simple and on the other hand, they can be so deep and complex. Personally, a morning prayer is a way to focus my time and attention on seeking God's plan. Whether I am in need of encouragement, peace, comfort or strength for the day ahead, God meets me in a very real and present way.
God, give me the strength to make it through the day.
God, help me to be a light to those around me.
God, give me the right words to speak when I need it.
God, help me to believe the best about others.
On the flip side, ending my day with prayer can be just as fulfilling and calming. I think there are times that I forget how important it is to close out my day in prayer. It helps me forget the turmoil of the day, change my perspective, and be focused.
God, thank you for reminding me of your goodness.
God, thank you for forgiving me when I sin.
God, thank you for being near.
Prayers – morning, noon or night – helps strengthen my relationship with God. It helps to align my focus with God’s will and helps me to better understand Him as well as the answers and guidance that I seek. As C.S. Lewis is attributed as saying, prayer “doesn’t change God. It changes me.”
