Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

21May
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
The world and all who dwell therein.
For it is he who founded it upon the seas
And made it from the river’s deep.
Who can ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who can stand in his holy place?
Those who have clean hands and a pure heart
Who have not pledged themselves to falsehoods
Not sworn by what is fraud.
They shall receive a blessing from the Lord
And a just reward from the God of their salvation.

-Psalm 24, Verse 1-5

Domini est terra

Oh, how I love this psalm.  In it, the psalmist clearly tells us that the Lord possesses the earth and everything in it.  It’s that simple.  The psalmist then asks who can ascend the mountain of the Lord and stand in his holy place?  That’s a little more difficult to grasp. We are then told that only those with clean hands and a pure heart will meet the criteria and receive a blessing from God.

The psalm also reminds us that as we face our daily battles (and who doesn’t have these?) we are the recipients of God’s strength and he will help us get through these times.  And he does.

In reading this psalm, I am also reminded that the earth belongs to the Lord, not to humankind.  I am humbled by the thought and know that now, more than ever, we must care for our precious earth with all our might. All of it.  We must cherish the rivers and the seas, the hills and valleys, the trees, the animals and the air we breathe.  They belong to God and we are merely the stewards of these astoundingly beautiful examples of God’s work.  We must care for these treasures as God would want us to.  They belong to him, as do we.

Musical Reflection - Reduce, Recycle, Reuse - Jack Johnson

Precious God, help us to be good stewards of the beautiful earth you created. Give us the tools, the creativity and the energy to care for this earth so that it will be here centuries from now to care for those who follow us. Amen
