Be still and know that I am God.
-Psalms 46:10
I don’t sit still very well. I feel like I’ve always got to be getting things done. Between work, kids, dinner, soccer,…I just don’t make the time sit and be.
Ask anyone in my family: I’m a yeller. And I don’t typically appreciate silence. Often when in conversation, I find myself planning in my mind what to say next, when I really should be listening. But deep down, I know that the quieter I say things, and especially in my silence, the more likely they are to listen.
You might say I’m a little bit of a control freak, especially when it comes to things that are completely out of my control. I stress and sometimes blow up. But I need to remind myself to “Let go and let God.” I’m getting better.
There is power in stillness. I challenge you (and myself) to stop, take a minute, look around. Where is God in the chaos? If we calm down, listen, be still, we can see exactly where God is in every situation. We can appreciate His role in our lives and His control in all things around us. By being still, we can find rest, strength, and a deeper connection with God and His powerful and constant presence, even in the midst of chaos.
“Be still and know that I am God” is a reminder to release our anxiety and relinquish control over the outcome of situations, trusting God's timing and His methods, to make a conscious effort to find a quiet, peaceful state to better connect with and to hear God's voice. And then, when we are still, listening, and when we completely place our trust in God, we can let go of our self-reliance and attempts at control, to instead rely on Him.
