Rest like a Butterfly

12May
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

- Matthew 11:28

We are in the midst of the dreaded month of May, which to many moms is reminiscent of December in its chaotic busyness. There are so many events to keep track of in May; graduations, end of the year performances, sports championships, exams, spring festivals, spring fundraisers and Mother's Day mixed in. I also happen to have both of my kids birthdays in the month of May which makes it extra special but quite hectic. Phew! I am weary just thinking about the month of May.

Jesus’ gracious invitation in Matthew 11:28 offers all of us rest and solace from our problems, which to me often means a break from the chaos. Jesus brings “rest to the weary, comfort to the hurting, solace to the heavily laden and rest for the soul.” The invitation in Matthew 11:28 is given to all people, but was initially given to the people of Israel by Jesus. Jesus was originally the Jewish messiah who was descended from Israel’s great King David. But Jesus was rejected by the Jewish leaders that He came to save. Jesus transferred his attention to those who believed and followed Him, and began teaching parables often to those who were heavily burdened and looking for a spiritual haven for their souls to rest. Jesus’ invitation was to “COME” to Him, whoever believes with no limitations or restrictions. Jesus’ call applied and still applies today to everyone- from the broken hearted, burdened sinner, tired and weary - all who simply believe.

Recently I read another mediation on this verse that stated “just like butterflies pause when it rains to protect their wings, we too sometimes need to pause when life gets hard.” The storms of life can wear us down, and today’s society encourages moms in particular to do it all- the career, the parenting, the household duties, the carpool, the volunteer work. Society dictates that moms juggle it all - and if you can’t you are seen as weak. But rest isn’t weak- it is wisdom. It is listening to God’s voice deep inside that is telling us to find some silence and rest in all the hustle and bustle that surrounds us in the month of May. God never asked us to take life at full speed, but to sometimes rest and “God promises to give us strength when the skies are clear” and we are ready to enter the chaos once again. Come to Me, be still, and let Him carry us through.

Musical Reflection - Butterflies - Kacey Musgrave

LORD, give us the strength to say no when we need to rest. Give us the courage to let go of worldly expectations and to come to You when we need it. Give us the inner strength to not push through, but to simply rest and be still. Amen.
